The easiest way to create a bootable USB with Linux is UNetbootin. You can build it on Windows or Linux and it couldn’t be easier. With a bootable USB you do not need a CD, DVD or FTP to install linux. Here is the step by step guide. Now you can install linux from usb.

UNetbootin allows you to create bootable Live USB drives for a variety of Linux distributions from Windows or Linux, without requiring you to burn a CD. You can either let it download one of the many distributions supported out-of-the-box for you, or supply your own Linux .iso file if you’ve already downloaded one or your preferred distribution isn’t on the list.

Requirements

Microsoft Windows 2000/XP/Vista, or Linux. If you are having trouble with the Linux version, try the Windows version, it usually works better.

A broadband internet connection to download the distribution’s .iso file (unless you’re using pre-downloaded files)

Features

UNetbootin can create a bootable Live USB drive, or it can make a “frugal install” on your local hard disk if you don’t have a USB drive. It can load distributions by automatically downloading their ISO (CD image) files, or by using existing ISO files, floppy/hard disk images, or kernel/initrd files, for installing other distributions.

unetbootin

UNetbootin can also be used to load various system utilities, including:

Parted Magic, a partition manager that can resize, repair, backup, and restore partitions.

Smart Boot Manager (SBM), which can boot off CD-ROM and floppy drives on computers with a faulty BIOS.

FreeDOS, which can run BIOS flash and other legacy DOS utilities.

Installation & Screenshots

If you are using Windows, run the file, select a distribution (which will download for you automatically), floppy/hard disk image (an image that you have already downloaded from www.ubuntu.com let’s say), or kernel/initrd to load, select a target drive (USB Drive or Hard Disk), then reboot once and you are done.

If using Linux, make the file executable (using either the command

chmod +x ./unetbootin-linux

or going to Properties->Permissions and checking “Execute”), then start the application, you will be prompted for your password to grant the application administrative rights, then the main dialog will appear, where you select a distribution and install target (USB Drive or Hard Disk), then reboot when prompted.

After rebooting, if you created a Live USB drive by selecting “USB Drive” as your install target, press the appropriate button (usually F1, F2, F12, ESC, or backspace) while your computer is starting up to get to your BIOS boot menu and select USB drive as the startup target; otherwise if there’s no boot selection option, go to the BIOS setup menu and change the startup order to boot USB by default. Otherwise, if you did a “frugal install” by selecting “Hard Disk” as your install target, select the UNetbootin entry from the Windows Boot Menu as the system boots up.

Installing Other Distributions Using UNetbootin

Download and run UNetbootin, then supply it with the appropriate ISO (CD image) file, floppy/hard disk image, or kernel and initrd files when prompted (see screenshot). Check your distribution’s download page to find the appropriate file; if in doubt use the ISO file.

If you’re loading an ISO file or floppy/hard disk image, that’s all that’s required (just press “OK” to start installing); otherwise if you’re manually specifying kernel and initrd files and you’d like to specify special booting options, check the distribution’s boot configuration files (usually after the “kernel” line in either isolinux.cfg, syslinux.cfg, menu.lst, or grub.conf) and supply them on the “Option” line.

And this is how you can install linux from usb. After completing this tutorial you will be able to boot and run linux from a USB drive.

I’ve been using an application called SyncJEBB on my Blackberry to sync up my device with my Gmail Calendar, Contacts and Address Book. It’s a pay service but it works really well. Here is the skinny on how to configure it.

I’m going to assume that you have already bought the software. On your mobile device select the SyncJeBB application found in the "Applications" section.
You will now see the screen shown below:

Now you will need to select the Settings option from the main menu.

This will provide you with the following screen:

You need to enter the following details in order to synchronise with GooSync:

  Server URL: http://sync.goosync.com
User Name: Your GooSync username
Password: Your GooSync password

The username is your username@domain.com and your password is the password you set.

Next you need to select the calendar option and enter the name Calendar into the "Foldername" field.

Select the contacts option and enter the name Contacts into the Foldername field.

Once done select the Save option from the menu.

To start the synchronisation process you need to select the Start Sync option from the menu:

AutoSync

The SyncJe client provides the AutoSync feature to allow you to automatically synchronise with the GooSync server.

We recommend that the sync intervals are set to no less than 15 minutes to ensure that connections are established.

If you are required to perform a hard reset on your mobile device your mobile calendar connection will be gone. You’ll have to re-create the connections before you will be able to view you calendar again. Please follow these instructions in order to restore your calendar data from Google using GooSync.

Please note: Failing to follow these steps can result in your data being removed from Google.

After performing a hard reset on your device restore your applications by syncing with the relevant desktop application (Palm Desktop/ActiveSync etc).

Once your applications are restored open the synchronisation client on your device.

Go into the Profile Settings and view the Calendar settings.

Ensure you set the Sync Mode to Slow and click OK.

Run the sync again to synchronise your Google Calendar data to your device.

You must ensure the Sync Mode is set to Slow before performing the first synchronisation.

If a Normal sync is performed after a hard reset the client will detect that your device calendar data is no longer present and will send delete commands for all these events to Google. This will result in your Google Calendar data being removed.

Google has quietly been developing Android for quite some time now. Android is the first truly open and comprehensive platform for mobile devices. It includes an operating system, user-interface and applications — all of the software to run a mobile phone, but without the proprietary obstacles that have hindered mobile innovation.

Google recently announced the Open Handset Alliance and Android with the goal of Android being the foundation for many new phones and will create an entirely new mobile experience for users, with new applications and new capabilities we can’t imagine today.

The Linux Phone Standards (LiPS) Forum yesterday announced the publication of specifications to improve interoperability across the Linux-based mobile telephony ecosystem and to standardise a layer of software that will make it easier to create mobile applications that can run on any Linux phone.

The Linux Phone Standards (LiPS) Forum yesterday announced the publication of specifications to improve interoperability across the Linux-based mobile telephony ecosystem and to standardise a layer of software that will make it easier to create mobile applications that can run on any Linux phone.

The specifications are the first public release to come out of the forum since it’s founding in 2005. They form part of the LiPS Release 1.0, the complete delivery of which is planned by the end of 2007. LiPS also unveiled a roadmap of additional specification areas to be developed up until 2008.

The specifications published include the following: LiPS’ reference model, an address book and voice call enabler, and user interface services (widget sets, key navigation and text input method APIs, based on GTK).

Before the end of 2007, the LiPS Forum will finalise the remaining elements of LiPS Release 1.0 by adding specifications relating to telephony, messaging, calendar, instant messaging, presence and additional user interface services API specifications.

The standards aim at benefitting the Linux-based mobile industry, especially in terms of reducing fragmentation, by informing and aligning OEMs, ISVs, operators and other consortia and standards bodies.

“This first set of specifications represents real-world requirements as well as hard work on the part of key mobile ecosystem participants,” noted Haila Wang, president of the LiPS Forum.

“Ongoing elaboration and adoption of the LiPS standards specifications will sustain the impressive growth of mobile Linux deployment, enhancing interoperability among devices and software, and streamlining time-to-market and rollout for Linux-based devices and services.”

“LiPS belongs to a new class of industry forums whose standards development model is closer to open source principles, i.e. standardization through public specifications and reference code implementations, rather than just paper-based,” commented Andreas Constantinou, senior analyst with VisionMobile and author of a forthcoming strategic report on mobile open source.

“LiPS release 1.0 will be important in helping Linux implementations converge, especially around telephony, PIM and UI services, where fragmentation is stalling otherwise unanimous manufacturer momentum behind mobile Linux.”

Scheduled for release in 2008 are the application framework, services APIs (eg those based on IMS), device management APIs (based on OMA DM), and additional enabler APIs (eg for multimedia).

In an unrelated announcement, LiPS yesterday also announced that industry veteran Bill Weinberg has joined the organisation as general manager focusing on business development. Weinberg will be in charge of growing LiPS membership and amplifying the impact the organisation has on the Linux-based mobile telephony ecosystem.

The new specifications, can be be downloaded from here
