Disable Hibernation In Windows Vista to Free Up RAM

If you don’t use the Hibernation feature Windows Vista offers, it’s taking up a lot of unnecessary hard drive space. The space it takes up depends on your RAM. If you have 1 GB of RAM, Hibernation uses up to 1 GB of hard drive space.

This guide will show you how to enable/disable the hibernation feature in Windows Vista.

Here’s how to disable hibernation in Windows Vista:

Click "Start", "Programs", "Accessories", right-click "Command Prompt" and click "Run as administrator ".

Copy & paste this text into the Command Prompt window:

powercfg h off

Press enter on your keyboard and hibernation is now off. It is normal not to see a confirmation message when you turn off hibernation.

If you want to enable hibernation, copy & paste this text into the Command Prompt window:

powercfg h on
