Christian Computing UBUNTU
Posted on 15 May 2007 by admin
Christian UBUNTU is not what most users would think it is. No shrines or temples, just good wholesome computing. The Christian theme has nothing to do with appearances rather more with providing a wholesome environment with some controls on content to keep out some of the adult material available on the Internet.
The two big differences are the inclusion of GnomeSword and DansGuardian. GnomeSword is a Bible study program and DansGuardian is a content filter. Ubuntu CE v3.0 (Christian Edition) is based on Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn, so you will have the same performance you would with regular Ubuntu. You can also “convert” your existing Ubuntu install to the Christian version.
You can download the install here.
Installation
As with the regular version of Ubuntu, the installation of the Christian edition is painless and takes just a few minutes. The flavour is actually a Live CD. After the desktop loads, you simply clicked on the Install icon on the desktop to begin the installation.
Even if you are new to Linux, the Ubuntu Linux Christian Edition is easy to use; you shouldn’t have any problem getting it to install onto your computer’s hard disk.

GnomeSword and DansGuardian
What sets Christian Ubuntu apart from other installs are these two programs. GnomeSword is a bible study application based on the Sword Project. GnomeSword lets you easily navigate between sections of the Bible. You can see passages from the DRC (Douay-Rheims Bible, Challoner Revision), King James, World English Bible, or the Spanish Reina-Valera bible. You can search the Bible by an exact phrase, regular expression or multi word. You can also bookmark your favorite passages and access them easily by clicking the Bookmarks button.

DansGuardian is an application that filters content so that you and your family will be protected from the various kinds of adult content available on the Internet. If you try access a web site blocked by DansGuardian, you’ll get a message telling you that the site has been blocked.
The software filters according to the following criteria:
- Blocked file extensions
- Blocked MIME types
- Blocked phrases
- Banned URLs
- Banned sites
- IPs
- Banned users
You can also configure whitelists according to the following criteria:
- Allowed phrases
- URLs not filtered
- Sites not filtered
- IPs not filtered
- Users not filtered
You can also view an Access Denied log in text format or in HTML.
